Regarding her appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s rendition of “Not Like Us” during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Serena Williams is correcting the record.
Although the 2024 hit is a direct jab at Drake, the tennis legend recently spoke with TIME magazine to clarify that her appearance on the Super Bowl Halftime Show wasn’t an attempt to disparage the Toronto rapper she intermittently dated over ten years ago.
Everyone was taken aback by Williams’ presence, but it wasn’t. To begin with, both Williams and Lamar are from Compton. On “Not Like Us,” Lamar cautions Drake that he “better not speak on Serena,” which explains Williams’ appearance once more.
“Of course. “Not,” she stated. “I’d never act in that manner. And it was unfortunate that anyone would ever believe that.

Drake has also been known to subtly mention Williams in his songs, as evidenced by his 2011 collaboration with J. Cole on “In the Morning” (Drake raps, “And I would always ride the stallions whenever she let me / I’m joking / I mean that thing is poking / I mean you kinda like that girl that’s in the US Open”) and his 2016 discussion of his collaboration with Rihanna in “Too Good.”
Williams responded, “Obviously I can see how someone would think that,” in reference to the apparent jab at Drake during her appearance on the Super Bowl Halftime Service. However, it’s definitely not. He has never caused me any bad feelings. We have known him for a long time.
During the same interview, Williams also responded to ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith’s statement that he would have divorced Williams over the cameo if he were married to her.

Williams stated, “I thought it was hilarious,” and she is married to Alexis Ohanian, a Reddit co-founder and billionaire. “He is free to hold his own opinions. But did you notice what my hubby said? It was very poetic.
