The rumor about Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers advanced significantly on Friday.
Rodgers was seen in the Steelers’ practice complex on Friday, which Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac described as “an indication a deal with the team could be forthcoming, per sources.”
The Steelers believed they were “getting closer” to settling their quarterback dilemma, according to an earlier story this week by NFL reporter Josina Anderson.
Other than the team complex, it doesn’t get any closer.
With the New York Jets in 2024, 41-year-old Rodgers completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Despite only having recovered from a torn Achilles that interrupted his 2023 season just a year earlier, he also participated in all 17 regular season games.
The only quarterbacks on the Steelers’ roster right now are Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. Justin Fields is off the market after agreeing to a two-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets, while Russell Wilson is a free agent.
When ESPN writer Jeremy Fowler appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show,” he disclosed that the Steelers tried to re-sign Fields.
They made an offer for Justin Fields last week or a week and a half ago, which he said was highly comparable with the Jets’ offer of nearly two years, $40 million, with $30 million guaranteed. “He must have felt more love from the Jets than from the Steelers, who basically benched him for Russell Wilson last season, after something went wrong and he decided to join them.”
It makes obvious that Pittsburgh would want to make an immediate impact after losing out on Fields, even though Rodgers might not be their first pick at quarterback in the upcoming campaign. Pay attention.
